Many friends told me that it is tough to find a good restaurant in Kelantan as it is an Islamic state. However, you have to get assistance from your local friends to bring you around as the delicious food are often hidden in this state.
To find a place to dine in Kota Bharu is not difficult after all. All you have to do is to drive about 12-15km away from the heart of the Islamic Capital, heading towards Tumpat.
I will give you the directions starting from Tesco in Kota Bharu.
Go across the bridge (Tesco on your left). First and second roundabout, go straight (12 o’clock) heading towards Tumpat and Pengkalan Kubur (the border town between Kelantan and Thailand).
When you see a police station for Wakaf Baru on your left, head for a turn to the left into a small lane with a pintu gerbang with BN, UMNO and PAS flags.
Take the first left immediately after you pass a restaurant on your right. Follow the road RIGHT IN past Ban Kok Thai Restaurant and the Siamese temple (which I blogged about yesterday). You should see the sign for the restaurant about 500 metres ahead.
Chengmai Thai Food restaurant offers one of the best Thai eateries in town. You have to travel through small and bumpy roads to get in there.
I presume the people who worked here are Thai Chinese. They watched Thai channels on the TV but spoke Hokkien to me while ordering food.
The little black box on your top right is playing Thai channels all night long as the workers and the owner would sit down and watch if there is nothing much to do.
This Tom Yum seafood is extremely delicious and I can say it is on par with the ones I ate in Bangkok.
This is one of Chengmai restaurant’s signature dishes. Directly translated from Chinese, it is called the ‘Burning Standing Chicken’.
When it is served, you would see fire on the dish for about 1 minute to make the skin crispier.
For 3 dishes and a few drinks, I was charged RM39 for two pax. Expensive? Perhaps it is a tad pricey but I’m willing to empty my wallet for a scrumptious meal!
YUMMY! I am glad I still remember the location even though it was 1 year ago when my ex-colleague brought me here.
