“Surprise!” I said, as I presented Mike with our itinerary for his birthday weekend: two tickets to one of his all-time favorite places, Hong Kong!
Hong Kong was familiar to me as it was my fourth trip to this special administrative region of China and I can speak fluent Cantonese. For Mike, it was a whole new experience. Moreover, he had watched a few TVB drama series prior to this trip so he was exhilarated to be surrounded by the settings of the stories.
Traveling around the city was made easy by using an Octopus card. This card is very versatile; it can be used at most transport methods and convenience stores like a debit card just by waving it over a sensor, even through a wallet or purse. It is definitely an efficient way to pay.
Hilariously, we found the Virginia Hotel, which bears the same name as the state Mike was born and raised in!
Meandering through the city at night is a feast for the all the senses. The wide variety of street food was all quite scrumptious and the never-ending shops were overflowing with items ranging from knick-knacks to electronics we’d never seen before.
If you can’t meet the stars, step on them! The Avenue of Stars provided us with a plethora of names we recognized from all our beloved dramas and movies. Visiting this destination can be a pilgrimage for a Hong Kong media lover. Mike is borderline smitten with Andy Lau, as you can see here.
Who can resist The Dragon?
The breathtaking Hong Kong skyline came to life with a magnificent light and music show, experienced at the waterfront across from the the family of iconic towers.
This birthday excursion was short but very sweet. There’s so much to see and do in this lively metropolis that I’m sure our future holds many return trips. Joigin! Until next time, Hong Kong!
